Description
So many problems with this.
It started out OK with a modestly interesting Cadmium Yellow wash which I added more colour to while wet, to give the lower half a bit of texture. Before the wash was applied I had sketched out the outline and some details of the 'floating island' with a 2H pencil, and then gone over the interior of the sketched area with masking fluid so I could paint over it and leave it unaffected. So far so good - at that stage it was looking OK.
The idea was to show some sort of earthy surface on top with a depression full of water, a little lake or pool. The initial pencil outlines got the idea quite well, but the painting of that area - the nasty brown bit - is terrible. The colour is bad, there is no sense of depth or distance, heavy bleeding into the surroundings... To cap it all, some of the paper tore when lifting off the mask, which accounts for the nasty defect in the center-right of the 'pool'.
Some parts of the craggy underside of the island actually look pretty fair; I actually got a sort of sense of depth and curvature, and light and shadow, esp. around the lefthand side. It starts falling apart around the 'waterfall' area, with a dark region that looks out of place, to the right of the upper fall.
By the time I had got to the large white area to the right, I just had no idea how to fix things - and that was the end of it. And the attempts at picking out areas in shadow on the farthest right edge are even worse.
TL;DR: The yellow background is marginally satisfying; some of the shading of the rock on the lefthand side works. Most of the rest sucks - the top surface is a study in how to do everything wrong.
